Wegovy vs Mounjaro: Which Is More Effective for Weight Loss?

Compare Wegovy, Mounjaro, and Retatrutide, including how they work, effectiveness, side effects, and who may benefit from GLP-1 therapy.

Reviewed by: dr. Angela Dalimarta, Sp.GK

Recently, weight management medications such as Wegovy and Mounjaro have gained worldwide attention, with many people sharing stories of losing significant amounts of weight.

However, many people still assume that Wegovy and Mounjaro are the same medication. In reality, they contain different active ingredients, work through different mechanisms, and have different levels of effectiveness. In addition, Retatrutide, a next-generation therapy, has recently attracted considerable interest.

So, what are the differences among these three treatments? And which one is more effective for weight loss?

Understanding Semaglutide, Tirzepatide, and Retatrutide

Although Wegovy and Mounjaro are widely discussed, these are brand names, not the names of the active ingredients.

Wegovy contains Semaglutide, which acts on the GLP-1 (Glucagon-Like Peptide-1) receptor. This hormone helps regulate appetite, slows gastric emptying, and promotes a feeling of fullness, leading to reduced calorie intake.

Mounjaro, on the other hand, contains Tirzepatide, which targets both GLP-1 and GIP (Glucose-Dependent Insulinotropic Polypeptide) receptors. This dual mechanism not only suppresses appetite but also improves insulin sensitivity and supports better blood sugar regulation.

Meanwhile, Retatrutide is a next-generation therapy that activates three metabolic pathways simultaneously: GLP-1, GIP, and the glucagon receptor. By targeting multiple pathways, it may provide greater weight loss potential. However, its overall safety profile remains under investigation, and long-term data are still being collected.

How Do They Work, and Which Is More Effective?

Although all three therapies are used to support weight loss, they do not work in exactly the same way.

Semaglutide promotes satiety, slows gastric emptying, and reduces appetite. Many patients also report reduced food noise, meaning fewer intrusive thoughts about food. Clinical trials have shown that Semaglutide may lead to an average weight loss of approximately 15% of initial body weight when combined with lifestyle modifications.

Tirzepatide not only reduces appetite but also improves insulin sensitivity, leading to better glucose metabolism. This dual-receptor mechanism is believed to contribute to greater weight loss compared with Semaglutide. Clinical studies have reported an average weight reduction of approximately 21%.

Retatrutide has an even broader mechanism of action. In addition to suppressing appetite, it increases fat utilization for energy, enhances energy expenditure, and may reduce visceral fat based on current clinical evidence. Early studies have shown average weight loss of up to 24%. However, Retatrutide is currently undergoing Phase 3 clinical trials and is not yet commercially available. The public should remain cautious of products claiming to contain Retatrutide that are sold through online marketplaces, social media, or unauthorized distributors.

Is GLP-1 Therapy Suitable for Everyone?

The answer is no.

Many individuals are interested in GLP-1 therapy simply because they want to lose a few kilograms. However, these medications are not intended for everyone pursuing weight loss.

Generally, treatments such as Semaglutide or Tirzepatide are considered for individuals with obesity (BMI ≥30), overweight (BMI ≥27) accompanied by weight-related medical conditions such as diabetes or hypertension, or patients with type 2 diabetes requiring additional treatment.

If your goal is simply to lose 3–5 kg, medication may not be necessary. In many cases, dietary modification, increased physical activity, and guidance from a clinical nutrition specialist are sufficient.

Certain medical conditions also require special consideration, including Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia Type 2 (MEN2), Medullary Thyroid Carcinoma, pancreatitis, severe gastroparesis, pregnancy, and breastfeeding.

Potential Side Effects

Like any medication, GLP-1 therapies may cause side effects, particularly during dose escalation.

Commonly reported side effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, bloating, abdominal discomfort, reduced appetite, and loss of muscle mass if adequate protein intake and resistance exercise are not maintained. Side effects are generally more common as doses increase, which is why dose adjustments should always be supervised by a physician.

Consult a Doctor Before Choosing the Right Treatment

The growing popularity of Wegovy and Mounjaro has led many people to believe that every weight loss journey requires medication. In reality, this is not always the case.

Every individual has different health conditions, weight goals, medical history, and lifestyle. For some people, healthy eating habits alone may be sufficient to achieve their goals. For others, a physician may recommend Semaglutide or Tirzepatide if medically appropriate.

At akasia 365mc, you can begin your journey with a clinical nutrition consultation starting from IDR 600,000. During your first consultation, our nutrition specialist will assess your health status, weight loss goals, and eating habits. You will also receive a personalized meal plan designed specifically for your body's needs.

If GLP-1 therapy is considered appropriate after evaluation, your physician will explain the most suitable treatment option, its benefits, potential risks, and realistic expectations, allowing you to make an informed medical decision rather than simply following a trend.
